The whole world was green. A brief curtsy before I begin to speak, it had been ingrained into my very nature by now. I answer the question as I have countless times before. "Elanor Gamgee, lady maid to Queen Arwen." Then comes the next, inevitable statement from the listener. And my customary response, nearly automatic by now. "Begging your pardon, sir, but I am not so very young. I am nearly 20 years old. I am a Halfling of the Shire, My Lord. It is only my height that makes me look young in many eyes." It is the same every time someone new came to the court. I've grown used to it in the five years that I've spent here. At first I found it rather amusing, but now… I've things to do. The children need tending, I've some washing left, and I need to prepare for the journey home next month. I don't have time to say that yes, my father is Samwise, the same Samwise from the songs, and that no, I don't often wear shoes and yes the Queen permits it. But I smile and answer the questions and retreat as soon as possible. Back to the safety of linens and embroidery and diapers, where I'm not pestered unless I want to be. It's a grand life, here, but I'm not sure it's what I'm really suited for.
