Title: Sage
Author: Elly
Character: Merry, Treebeard, Pippin
Rating: G
Notes: The characters belong to the Professor and his estate. This is slightly movieverse, or at least inspired by the movie, and takes place on the way to the entmoot. Also: feedback is really, really neat. ;D

Pippin yawned hugely as Treebeard spoke and tried to find the most comfortable, least leafy place on the Ent's hand to lay his head. Merry watched him settle in and tried to fight off the haze in his mind caused by the day's events as his cousin succumbed to sleep.

He tried focusing on Treebeard's voice for a bit, not wanting to seem rude to someone who had done so much for them. Unfortunately, this had something of the opposite effect he desired- Treebeard's voice was not something that could generally be called quiet, but it, like Ents themselves, was unrushed and drawing out, making Merry more sleepy than before. He watched the scenery around them pass by, not quite wanting to look down when the ground seemed so very far away. The treetops passed them by, blurring into one. Merry was finding it more and more of a challenge to stay awake.

He though about trying to wake Pippin, who was now snoring rather loudly, his head supported by Treebeard's… well, Merry supposed it was the closest thing Ents had to a thumb. Grinning at his cousin despite himself, Merry didn't realize they had reached something of a clearing until Treebeard stopped walking.

"Look, little one." He rumbled, raising his arm slightly so Merry could see above the tops of the trees.

They were on top of a hill, with Fangorn spread out beneath them, dark and powerful. Merry suddenly felt very tall, as though it were he who was tall enough to lift two Halflings to what felt like the sky.

"This is my home." Treebeard drew out slowly, pride in his voice.

"It's wonderful," said Merry. And he meant it, truly. Fangorn had frightened him at first, but from up high he felt the power of the forest run through him. He felt it come up through the ground, up through the trees and into him. It was a curious moment, the surge of adrenalin, almost euphoric. And then it was gone, rushing through him into Treebeard.

Merry looked up wide-eyed at Treebeard, who looked down at him with eyes as old as the forest.

Suddenly, Merry didn't feel quite so tall.
